October 28, 1944 - The Irish get a scare

By Olson

The Illini gave the #1 Irish all they wanted.

Illinois star back Buddy Young took off on a 74 yd TD run on the 3rd play of the game. It was the first time all season that the Irish were behind.

Young would leave the game late in the first half, never to return, injured on a hard tackle by ND's 6'7 DT John 'Tree' Adams.

Kelly scored for the Irish in the 2nd Q to make the score 7-6 Illinois.

It stayed that way until the 4th Q when the Irish scored on a 'hook & ladder' play. QB Dancewicz hit Kelly with a quick pass, who in turn lateraled to a streaking Maggioli, who took the ball 71 yds for the game winning TD.

This was Chick Maggioli's final game in an ND uniform. Chick was called up by the Marine Corps after the contest-ending his season.....surprising how this happened JUST before the ND-Navy game.
