November 28, 1970 - Theismann sets passing record in loss

Notre Dame Southern Cal 1970 TicketHeading into the final regular season game of the year, Notre Dame was 9-0 and ranked #4 in the country. (The previous week they were ranked #2 but a 3-0 win against #7 LSU did not impress the voters enough to keep them ahead of Ohio State or Nebraksa.) Now, Notre Dame was playing at unranked Southern Cal (5-4-1) behind their leader Joe Theismann.

Notre Dame opened the game on an eighty yard touchdown drive to start off 7-0. But then Southern Cal responded with three touchdowns and after the first quarter the Irish were down 21-7. By halftime the score read 24-14 but Notre Dame would never get any closer. In the third quarter, Southern Cal returned two fumbles for touchdowns. By the end of the game, Notre Dame lost 38-28.

But despite the team losing, Theismann had a performance for the record books. Completing 33 of 58 passes Theismann threw for 526 yards, a record for Notre Dame quarterbacks. He also had two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. In the driving rain throughout the game, Notre Dame had eight turnovers (4 INT, 4 fumbles) and could not recover from those mistakes.

              1 2 3 4
Notre Dame 7 7 7 7 - 28
Southern Cal 21 3 14 0 - 38

Heading into the Cotton Bowl against #1 and undefeated Texas, Notre Dame was ranked #6 with a 9-1-0 record. The Irish would win against Texas and finish #2.
