October 26, 2002 - Ty brings Notre Dame to 8-0

Notre Dame was proclaimed back with their #6 ranking and undefeated 7-0 record. With the band and fans in tow, Notre Dame traveled down to Tallahassee for their match up against #11 Florida State. In their last 89 games at Doak Campbell Stadium, the Seminoles were 84-5 (0.944). Bobby Bowden was skeptical of Notre Dame winning by "smoke and mirrors" and poorly stated:

"Notre Dame's plugged into a higher power. They've got prophet Ty. He's like some black Catholic Moses leading them to the Promised Land."

The Irish seemed to fall into their wins with the defense providing many of the points. The defense started the game off by holding FSU to a three and out. On Notre Dame's first play, Carlyle Holiday threw a 65 yard touchdown pass to Arnaz Battle which put Notre Dame ahead 7-0 two minutes into the game. Battle would rouse the Seminole crowd after nixing the tomahawk chop. After trading a pair of field goals, at the end of first quarter Notre Dame led 10-3. By halftime, the game was tied 10-10.

The second half was all Irish. By taking advantage of Florida State turnovers, Notre Dame put 17 points on the board in the span of two and a half minutes. Another touchdown in the fourth quarter put Notre Dame ahead 34-10. The final score would read 34-24 when Florida State scored a touchdown with a minute to go and then recovered an onside kick.

The win would put Notre Dame to 8-0 and a #4 ranking the following week. At the moment, first year coach Ty Willingham was looking to be bringing Notre Dame back to national prominence. But the following week would pit #4 Notre Dame against unranked Boston College and we know they have played the role of spoiler before.
