April 21, 1879 - Father Sorin leaves for Europe
Once Father Sorin came to Indiana, he took very much to the American way of life and considered himself an American. That doesn't mean he stayed in America for the rest of his life though. Father Sorin would make many trips from Notre Dame back to France and to the Vatican. He was often referred to as 'The American' in these meetings as others knew of his new-found affection for the New World.
Today, Father Sorin set off on what would be his 36th transatlantic journey. But, he would never make it across the ocean this time...
